Learn about Cape Byron's significant places, history and traditional stories
Our tours are guided by Delta Kay, an Arakwal Bundjalung woman who is passionate about sharing Aboriginal culture. Delta is well known and respected as an Arakwal elder in the Byron Shire. Her ancestors have lived in the area surrounding Byron for thousands of years. Arakwal customs, knowledge, ceremonies and stories have been passed down to her for safe keeping.
Explore Cape Byron on an easy 500 metre return walk as you learn about Aboriginal existence before colonisation, including how Arakwal people cared for and preserved the land. Delta also explains the devastating impact of settlement and displacement on her people and how her family eventually negotiated their Native Title.
Delta teaches some Bundjalung language and provides information about local bush tucker, natural medicine, tools, weapons and artefacts.
During the tour, guests often see an abundance of wildlife, such as dolphins, wallabies and Fairy Wrens to name a few. The views on tour are also truly spectacular, from coastal rainforest to the beautiful beaches and rocky cliffs. At the end of the tour, enjoy tasting a variety of delicious bush tucker foods, a cup of bush tea and a biscuit.
You’ll leave feeling inspired and humbled after discovering so much more about the land you walk and rest on.
